Crew cab dump truck
The configuration most established roofers converge on. It carries the crew out and the tear-off back, and tipping debris rather than shovelling it saves time on every single job the vehicle attends.
Configurations commonly used to carry material bundles and tow debris trailers.
The work involves carry material bundles and tow debris trailers, which most often points to dump trucks, flatbed & stake bed trucks, commercial pickup trucks. The right choice depends on how much weight you carry, whether you tow, and how tools need to be reached on site.
This is general guidance, not engineering advice. Confirm payload, GVWR, towing capacity and upfit suitability against the specific vehicle and the manufacturer’s documentation.

Check AvailabilityRoofing inverts the assumption behind most trade vehicles. The heaviest material usually arrives on a supplier’s boom truck and is loaded straight onto the roof, so the contractor’s own vehicle is not the thing carrying the bundles.
What it does carry is a crew, compressors, nail guns, hoses, ladders and — on the way back — tear-off debris. That last one is the specification driver everybody underestimates. Old material comes off wet, heavy and awkward, and it has to go somewhere.
This is why dump capability appears so often in roofing fleets. Shovelling debris out of a flat bed by hand is slow, and the time lost on every job accumulates into something worth paying to avoid.
Crew transport is the second constraint. Roofing runs on crews rather than individuals, so seats matter, and a crew cab that carries four or five people plus equipment is a different vehicle from a regular cab with a long bed.
Ladders and access equipment are constant. Every job needs them, they are long, and they are awkward enough that a proper rack is worth specifying rather than improvising with straps and hope.
The configuration most established roofers converge on. It carries the crew out and the tear-off back, and tipping debris rather than shovelling it saves time on every single job the vehicle attends.
A cheaper route to the same capability, and a reasonable one for smaller operations. The insert consumes some payload itself and holds less than a purpose-built bed, so it suits residential work better than commercial tear-offs.
Preferred where the vehicle also carries material or equipment that does not suit a dump bed. Loading from the side is easier than over a tailgate, though debris handling goes back to being manual work.
Roofers doing leak repair, inspection and maintenance rather than replacement need secure dry tool storage far more than debris capacity. A van suits that work and looks right arriving at a residential property.
