Sustained heat above 100°F is a mechanical load, not a comfort problem. It shortens battery life, degrades coolant faster, raises tyre failure risk when combined with underinflation, and reduces the margin available to anything towing near its rating. The fixes are ordinary maintenance done on a tighter interval than the manufacturer schedule assumes, plus honest specification when you buy.

Why the standard schedule underestimates this

Manufacturer maintenance intervals are written for average use in average conditions. Inland Southern California is neither. Valley temperatures from Hemet through Perris to San Bernardino regularly exceed 100°F for weeks at a time, and a truck working loaded through an afternoon in that is operating well outside what an average assumption covers.

Most manufacturers publish a second schedule, usually labelled severe service, covering exactly these conditions. For commercial use in this region that is the honest one to follow, and businesses that treat the standard interval as adequate tend to discover the difference through failures rather than through inspections.

Batteries fail in summer, not winter

The common assumption is backwards. Cold weather is when a weak battery finally refuses to turn an engine over, but heat is what killed it — high underhood temperatures accelerate the internal degradation that eventually shows up as a no-start.

In practice that means battery age matters more here than test results at any single moment. A three-year-old battery that tests fine in June is a different proposition from a three-year-old battery elsewhere. For a fleet, replacing proactively on age is cheaper than a roadside call-out and a crew standing idle.

On a used purchase, check the date code rather than accepting that it starts. It is a thirty-second check that tells you something the test light does not.

Cooling systems and the grades

A cooling system that copes fine in March can be marginal in August, and the difference shows precisely when you least want it: climbing a grade with a load in the middle of the afternoon. The routes out of the valley towards the coastal basin, and north over the passes, are exactly that scenario.

The failure mode is rarely dramatic. More often it is a truck that runs hotter than it should for a season, quietly ageing hoses, the water pump and the transmission fluid, and then fails at eighty thousand miles rather than a hundred and forty.

Two things prevent most of it. Keep the radiator and intercooler physically clear — dust and insects pack into the fins on rural and construction work and nobody looks. And treat coolant condition as a scheduled check rather than a top-up when the level drops.

Tyres are the underrated risk

Heat plus underinflation is how commercial tyres fail, and both conditions are routine on a busy fleet. A loaded truck on hot asphalt generates substantial heat in the sidewall, and an underinflated tyre generates considerably more because it flexes further with every rotation.

Weekly pressure checks on anything working loaded are not excessive here. On duallies, the inner rears are the ones that get missed, and an underinflated inner running against a correctly inflated outer is a failure waiting to happen that is entirely invisible from a walk-round.

Tyre age is worth watching alongside tread depth. Sustained heat degrades rubber over time regardless of mileage, so a truck with plenty of tread on old tyres is not as sound as it looks.

Specification decisions that pay back here

When ordering, the heavy-duty cooling and towing packages are worth having if there is any prospect of towing near capacity. They are inexpensive on the original order and impossible to add sensibly later, and this is the region where the margin gets used.

An exhaust brake on a diesel earns its place for anyone regularly descending grades loaded, because it takes a substantial share of the retardation work off the service brakes and away from the heat they are already fighting.

And consider the powertrain honestly against the duty cycle. Short urban stop-start work in severe heat is punishing for diesel after-treatment, which needs sustained temperature to regenerate cleanly. A petrol engine sidesteps that problem entirely and is frequently the better operational choice for local service work regardless of the heat.

Protecting crews as well as trucks

California requires employers to provide shade, water and rest breaks for outdoor workers above defined temperature thresholds, and those obligations bear directly on how a working day is scheduled here. The practical effect on vehicles is that air conditioning stops being a comfort item and becomes equipment.

For crews spending hours in a vehicle, a failed air conditioning system is a reason to take the truck off the road rather than something to fix at the next service. Budget for it accordingly, and check it works properly on any used purchase made in winter — plenty of buyers do not, and discover the problem in June.
